 Professional sportspersons earn all or a part of their earnings by taking part in sporting events whether as individuals or players in a group. They usually are specialized in a particular sport which includes Australian Rules Football, basketball, boxing, cricket, netball, golf league and soccer, swimming, tennis and many others however some might be involved in more than one.

 You are able to work as an athlete without formal qualifications. However, a high level of expertise in your chosen sport is essential. Players in team sports will be under the guidance of a coach , whose task is to build and enhance their skills. Individual athletes usually have coaches to help them in achieving elite level. People who are still in school could choose to further develop their skills by attending a specialist sport high school which combines traditional school subjects with specialist coaching in sports and competition across a variety of sports.Many sporting associations offer training to athletes who are aspiring to be top performers in specific sports. Training is also available in related areas such as coaching, sport development, refereeing/umpiring and sports administration.Sportspeople may study courses in sports-related areas such as sports science, human movement studies, physiotherapy, sports administration, sports coaching, sports journalism, physical education and sports psychology. These studies are not essential for employment as a professional sportsperson.

 National Sporting Organisations (NSOs) provide scholarships that allow elite athletes to train and live in the same place, sometimes in association together with Australian Sports Commission in Canberra. It is the Australian Sports Commission offers a number of sports programs covering many different sports, including a restricted number for disabled athletes. Certain athletes may be offered the possibility of training abroad.
